What Is a SEER Rating?

If you have an air conditioner, you may have heard of a SEER rating. It’s important to not only know what a SEER rating is, but also which one is right for your home. There is no SEER rating that’s right for everyone.

Seer Rating Explained

SEER is an acronym for seasonal energy efficiency ratio. It’s a measurement of the energy efficiency of air conditioners. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient an air conditioner is. The lowest SEER rating is 10, while highly efficient air conditioners can have up to 22 SEER. As of 2023, all air conditioners must be at least 14 SEER.

What Is a Good Seer Rating?

A good SEER rating is 14 or higher. You can pay more for a more efficient model, which may make sense if you live in a hot environment. While the air conditioner will cost more, its operating costs will be less than one with a lower SEER rating.

What Are the Advantages of a High Seer Rating?

Air conditioners with a high SEER rating aren’t just more energy efficient. They can benefit you in other ways, such as by making your home more comfortable. An air conditioner with a low SEER rating is either off or on. When they’re on, they run at full speed.

If your air conditioner has a high SEER rating, it has a two-stage or variable-speed compressor and a variable-speed motor. This means it can operate at different speeds. Your home is less likely to have warm and cold spots with this technology. The air conditioner will also be quieter than one with a lower SEER rating.
