How to Troubleshoot an AC Issue

mountain

At Mountain View Heating, we understand how frustrating it can be when your air conditioner stops working, especially during the hottest weeks of the year. Before calling for a repair, try these basic troubleshooting steps to try to get your system back up and running.

Start with the Thermostat

Make sure your thermostat is set to “cool” and that the temperature is lower than the current room temperature. If your system isn’t responding, try replacing the batteries or resetting the device.

Check the Air Filter

A clogged air filter can restrict airflow, causing your system to shut down or freeze. Locate the return vent, remove the filter, and check for dust buildup. If it’s dirty, replace it with a new one and see if that restores normal operation.

Inspect the Circuit Breaker

A tripped breaker is a common cause of AC failure. Check your electrical panel and look for the breaker labeled “AC” or “cooling.” If it’s off, reset it and wait a few minutes to see if the system starts.

Look Outside at the Unit

Make sure your outdoor condenser unit is clear of leaves, weeds, or debris. If the fan isn’t spinning or you hear unusual noises, turn off the system and contact a professional.

Additional Checks You Can Make

  • Vents and registers: Make sure supply vents are open and unblocked by furniture or rugs.
  • Drain line: If your system has a clogged condensate drain, it may shut off automatically. Look for signs of standing water near the indoor unit.
  • Ice on coils: If you see ice forming on indoor or outdoor components, turn off the unit and let it thaw before restarting.
