Check your doors and windows to see if any gaps will allow cold air to enter your home. You can seal gaps with silicone caulk. If you find any loose-fitting window sashes, apply weather stripping to seal them.
Replace the Furnace Filter
Replace the furnace filter in the fall before you need to heat your home. A dirty filter will make your furnace work harder than it should and can result in expensive repair bills and higher energy costs. You should check the filter every month during the winter and replace it as needed, which is usually every other month.
Seal Air Leaks Around Doors and Windows for Winter
You should keep flashlights in your home in case the power goes out. If you already have flashlights, test them to make sure that they work. Keep extra batteries on hand, so you’re prepared if there’s a long power outage.
Drain Your Water Heater
Fall is a good time to drain and refill your water heater. Sediment collects at the bottom of a water heater and needs to be removed. If you don’t remove the sediment, it causes your water heater to work harder than it should and can cause it to fail.

In the fall, it’s time to reverse the direction that your ceiling fans rotate. When your ceiling fans are operating in reverse, they push warm air down. You will probably be able to turn your thermostat down a degree or two by following this practice.
